Note Preferences Guide

Learn how to customize how Quill writes your therapy notes -- from note format to custom instructions to terminology and more.

Every therapist has their own style when it comes to documentation. Some like SOAP, some like DAP. Some want concise notes, some need more detail. Some refer to themselves as "therapist", others as "clinician" or "counselor".

That's why we built Note Preferences -- a way to customize how Quill writes your notes, so they sound more like you.

What are Note Preferences?

Note Preferences are settings that shape how Quill generates your therapy progress notes. Instead of editing the same things over and over again, you set your preferences once, and Quill applies them every time.

You can access Note Preferences in two places:

  1. On the note generation page -- When you're generating a note, you'll see a "Note Preferences" box. Click "Edit Preferences" to make changes on the fly.

  2. On the My Account page -- Go to "My Account" to update your preferences anytime, even when you're not actively generating a note.

What can you customize?

Here's a quick overview of everything you can adjust:

  • Note Format -- Choose the structure of your progress notes (SOAP, DAP, BIRP, PIRP, or SIMPLE).

  • Custom Instructions -- Give Quill specific guidance on tone, style, and content -- like giving feedback to a colleague.

  • Note Length -- Choose between normal length or extra concise notes.

  • Therapist & Client Terms -- Replace "therapist" and "client" with your preferred terminology.

  • Find & Replace -- Automatically swap out words or phrases in your generated notes.

We also have a feature called Sticky Notes that lives on the note generation page -- it's like a personal teleprompter to help you remember what to include in your session summaries.

Why we built this

Because every therapist is different! We kept hearing things like:

"I wish the notes were a bit shorter."

"Can I use 'patient' instead of 'client'?"

"I always have to add the same sentence about medical necessity."

So we built Note Preferences to solve those problems. Set it once, and Quill handles the rest.

No extra charge

All of these customization options are included with your Quill subscription -- and they're all available during the free trial too. No pricing tiers, no add-ons.
