Recorded Mental Health Conversations

Another Article

Practitioners and patients alike are concerned about what it means for their privacy when providers insist on the use of AI scribes in the mental health space. Here's another article on this topic, this time by The Markup.

Another day, another article written about how therapy sessions are being recorded -- and how folks aren't happy about it.

The latest comes from The Markup, which you can read here: https://themarkup.org/privacy/2026/06/16/your-medical-provider-might-be-recording-your-mental-health-care-visits

And we wanted to highlight a passage that highlights a point that is rarely pointed out by news outlets:

"Described in a press release as “ambient listening technology,” the AI-powered scribe is designed to help clinicians including mental health providers securely capture clinical notes during patient visits.
But what the description fails to indicate is that the tool records entire medical appointments, including deeply personal mental health sessions."

I appreciate that they call out how these tools rely on the use of very generic or confusing names like "ambient listening" or "AI scribe" while leaving out the "recording" and "transcribing" part. It's hard to ask for informed consent when providers do not know this -- and it's hard for clients to provide that informed consent when they also do not know this.

Many thanks to The Markup for drawing attention to this topic!
