How to Use the Sticky Note

Use the Sticky Note as a personal teleprompter to help you remember what to include in your session summaries.

Ever forget to mention something in your session summary? The Sticky Note feature is here to help.

Think of it as a personal teleprompter -- a quick outline that stays visible while you're recording your summary, reminding you what to include.

What is the Sticky Note?

The Sticky Note is a customizable text box that appears on the note generation page. Whatever you write in it stays there, session after session, acting as a reminder of what details to cover in your summary.

It's like having a physical sticky note on your desk -- except it won't smudge up your laptop screen.

Why use the Sticky Note?

Here's the problem it solves:

  • Most therapists walk through the same general details each session (though with different specifics).
  • Forgetting to include a detail means you either have to edit the note later or re-record your summary.
  • Any pause while recording ("hmmm, what else happened...") costs you time.

The Sticky Note keeps you on track. Glance at it while you're recording, and you'll be less likely to forget something important.

How to set up your Sticky Note

Step 1: Go to the note generation page. Navigate to "Generate Note" or start creating a new note.

Step 2: Find the Sticky Note section. You'll see a box labeled with your name's Sticky Note (for example, "Jon's Sticky Note"). It might already have some default content to get you started.

Step 3: Click "Edit Sticky Note". This opens a text area where you can write or edit your reminder.

Step 4: Add whatever helps you remember what to cover -- a list of topics you always mention, questions to answer about each session, or reminders about clinical details to include.

Step 5: Click "Save Sticky Note" and you're done. Your note will be there waiting for you the next time you generate a note.

Example Sticky Note content

Here's an example of what you might include:

- What brought the client in today?
- What topics were discussed?
- What interventions did I use?
- How did the client respond?
- Any homework or plan for next session?
- Risk assessment (SI/HI)?

Or maybe something more specific to your practice:

- Mood/affect
- Progress on treatment goals
- Coping skills practiced
- Themes from session
- Plan for next session

The content is entirely up to you. Whatever helps you record a complete summary is the right answer.

Tips for using the Sticky Note

Keep it brief. The Sticky Note is meant to be a quick reference, not a detailed template. Short bullet points work best.

Make it personal. Everyone's documentation style is different. Write reminders that make sense to you.

Update it as needed. If you find yourself consistently forgetting a certain detail, add it to your Sticky Note. If something's no longer relevant, remove it.

Use it alongside Custom Instructions. The Sticky Note helps you remember what to say in your summary. Custom Instructions help Quill know how to write the note. They work great together.

Direct Quotes tip

One helpful thing to include in your Sticky Note is a reminder about how to capture direct quotes from your client. At Quill, we recommend saying "quote" before the quote and "unquote" after.

For example, in your summary you might say:

"Client said that they were feeling quote overwhelmed and anxious unquote about the upcoming deadline."

This helps Quill know to include the exact phrasing in your note.

That's it for the Sticky Note! It's a small feature, but therapists tell us it makes a real difference in their workflow.
